Our Homemade Toothpaste Recipe

In between room makeovers and DIY projects, I like to add a little real life here on my blog.  And today I want to share my family’s homemade toothpaste recipe.  I have been making toothpaste for my family for at least five years.  I promise that it is super simple and once you use it, you’ll never go back to store-bought.

Here are the reasons why I make our own homemade toothpaste:

  • It cleans our teeth so much better than any manufactured toothpaste.
  • It is more effective than store-bought brands.  The proof: no cavities for my one kiddo since he began using this.  Before then, cavities were the norm for him.
  • I know exactly what ingredients are in our toothpaste.  Nothing extra, just the good stuff to clean our teeth.

Ingredients for Homemade Toothpaste:

4 T. Castile Soap

1 1/4 c.  Coconut Oil

4 T. Olive Oil

1 c. Baking Soda

24 drops of Orange Essential Oil

36 drops of Mint Essential Oil

{If you click on any of the above ingredients, it will take you to a link of a product that I recommend.  You will notice that I have not linked any essential oils.  I am not partial to any particular brand and don’t want to get involved in that “discussion.”  Ha!}

Directions to make homemade toothpaste:

Gather your liquid ingredients together in a bowl and stir.

{Coconut oil can be in a liquid or solid form, depending upon the temperature in your home.  You may need to bring the coconut oil to it’s liquid form via stove top or microwave.}

You will notice that it is a very runny consistency at this point and that is okay.  I leave mine out on our kitchen counter for a few hours to solidify.

Once it has set, you will notice more of a creamy consistency.

This recipe will make about 2 1/2 cups of toothpaste.  Each member of our family has their own toothpaste container and we refill as necessary.  I make a batch at a time and store any leftovers in our pantry and take it out when someone needs more.  {Always thoroughly wash the containers in between refills to remove any germs.}

To use the toothpaste, simply dip your toothbrush into your jar and take out the desired amount.

I like to use these glass jars for adults and plastic containers for kids.

{Now for my disclaimer: I am not a medical professional or a dentist.  Consult your health care physician before making any changes to your dental care.}

I also need to be upfront and tell you that you may not like this toothpaste at first.  And that’s okay.  I promise that it will grow on you.  Give it a few weeks and see if you notice a change in how clean your teeth feel.  As I mentioned earlier, we have avoided cavities by using this toothpaste.  It has also really helped with other dental issues.  And guys, can I say something no one likes to acknowledge?  Teeth fuzz.  Ugh.  Yes, I went there.  But…by using this homemade toothpaste, that is never an issue anymore!

Now, if that doesn’t convince you to try it {or to never read my blog again…yikes!} then I don’t know what will.

Let me know if you make this homemade toothpaste!  I love to hear from you!

xo,

Leigh
