Top 6 Little by Little Farmhouse Blog Posts of 2016

Can you believe that it’s the middle of January already?  I may be behind the ball a little bit on a 2016 recap, but to be honest, this girl is still new to this blogging world!  I might act like I know what I’m doing, but shhhh…don’t tell anyone…I’m making it up as I go!

I started this blog in April 2016 as I creative outlet to share our family’s journey in our new {to us} farmhouse.  And for those of you who have followed along since the beginning, you know how long it took me to become consistent with posts.  I’ll let you in on a secret…it took me seven months.  Yup, that brings us into early December…only a little over a month ago.  I had gotten to the point where I was questioning what I was doing on here.  Doubt crept in as I surveyed the landscape and saw so many incredibly talented home decor and DIY blogs.  I told myself that there was only one way to find out if I could “run with the big girls” and that was to jump in with two feet.  Well, sort of.  I still have time and budget constraints, but I was going to start running this blog race using what I have at my disposal.  Some time.  Some money.  Lots of internal motivation.  And lots of projects in which to work on.

I was doing well, until…last week.  To be honest, I began to question the time and effort that it would take to make this blog a success.  Now, I know success can be a relative term.  But this girl has a really hard time being a slouch, so success for me is shooting for the stars.  I ended up taking a few days off from social media and blogging and it turned out to be a good time to decompress and focus.  I had a really great conversation with my husband over the weekend and after his encouragement as well as an incredible church service, I’m back to jumping in with two feet.  I am leaping forward and trusting God to work in and through me.  I will look for the ground that He wants me to gain.

I thought that after a few contemplative days, a recap of my top 6 posts from 2016 would be just the recharge that I need.  Plus, it may introduce some of my new friends here to a few of my older posts.  Without further adieu…oh, and let’s start with number one!  Anticipation kills me and I don’t like surprises, so let’s not save the best for last!

1. “Visions of Home

This was actually one of my very first posts last spring.  Yes, it’s been on the blog the longest on this list, but that isn’t what gave it the number one ranking.  Our original living room makeover has consistently been a reader favorite throughout the year.  I personally love this room and so do our friends that stop by.  It has a very calm and peaceful cottage undertone to it.  I spent a few other days over the summer and the fall making some more tweaks to the room that you can read about here and here.

2. “Heart and Feet

This post came quickly too me as far as writing it.  Convincing myself to put it out there took a bit longer.  It’s hard to know how much of oneself we should share with others.  Will they laugh?  Will it sound cheesy?  Questions of uncertainty ran through my mind.  And then I just went for it and shared my heart and where it currently was in our family’s leap of faith.  I was so glad that I did as I heard from several of you about how much this post helped encourage you.  Thank you, friends, for opening your arms to my heart thoughts!

3.  “Simple Christmas {Living Room}

Oh, the most wonderful time of the year!  Christmas is a magical season of anticipation and a growing faith for our family.  And I had so much fun decorating our home.  In our living room, I went with a softer and more subtle color scheme and decor.  I didn’t want to compete with the calmness of this room, so I worked with it.  And I’m so glad that I took photos because I may just copy it again next year!  {I did go with a more traditional Christmas color scheme and decor in our dining room and you can see all those pictures here.}

4. “Brighter Days are Here!

This dining room makeover was a true labor of love poured out by my Mom and my 3 kiddos.  While the hubs was away on business, we got down to business too!  It was a fun and exhausting week that left us with a room that we all love to spend time in now.  Out with the dark walls and in with light and freshness!  This room is truly the heart of our home as it is connected to our galley kitchen.  And you know that with a husband and 3 kids, I am preparing and serving meals three times a day like clockwork.  I feel so blessed to be able to work in this beautiful room!  {You can also see all the work that was done in our kitchen here!}

5. “A Bedroom to Grow Into…

I am so excited to see that one of my kids bedroom makeovers made it onto this list!  I had set a {crazy} goal of transforming each of my 3 kids rooms while they were at camp last summer.  Sounds simple enough.  Each child was scheduled to be away a different week.  Yeah, what I hadn’t factored into my plan was that I only had one week in between each room makeover until the next child went to camp.  If you do the math, you’ll see that I did 3 bedrooms over the course of 5 weeks.  In the middle of an unusually hot summer.  Oh and we don’t have central air conditioning.  It was a hot and exhausting few weeks, but the huge smiles on their faces at their room reveals, made it all worth it.  I had felt that it was important for their personal journey’s of acceptance with our move that they had a place that felt like theirs.  And the floral wallpaper in the boys bedrooms and the dark paneling in our daughters bedroom wasn’t helping them feel like this is home.  {You can check out our 8 year old’s bedroom here and our 13 year old’s bedroom here.}

6. “I Did the Unthinkable *Gasp*!

Now, who doesn’t love a painted piano?  Don’t answer that if you’re going to say no.  But, really, when you don’t like the look of a piano that you’ve had in your living room for 4 years, it can’t hurt to change the color!  Free piano + chalk paint = Happy Mom!  This month marks 5 years that our daughter has been playing the piano and although I never thought I’d have one in my home, here we are making do with what we’ve got!  This little makeover only took a few hours and the results made all my indecision worthwhile.  I do have one regret though…not painting it sooner!

So, what do you think?  How would your favorite posts rank against this list?  I would love to hear from you!
