Farmhouse Decorating

Simple Christmas {Living Room}

The original part of our farmhouse was built in 1836…the anti open-concept century.  With the two additions on the house in the past few decades, it is a long home.  This has its pros and cons.  A pro for the Christmas season is that I can easily decorate with different color schemes in each room.  Last week, I shared our traditional Christmas dining room.  Today, I am going to share our living room, which has a more subtle, softer, and simpler Christmas appeal.

We’ll start with the “feature” of our living room, and that is this beautiful bookcase!  You can get all the behind the scenes details of its transformation here.  For Christmas, I simplified the color scheme on the shelves and added little touches of whimsy and winter.

My sweet husband painted these letters onto some boards that I had picked up at Wal-Mart.  I knew that he could make boards like this, but with the Christmas season I didn’t want to add another thing to his list.  Instead, I nicely asked for him to paint some lettering on them for me.  He is an incredible artist and even though lettering is not his specialty, his artistic mind could envision it much better than I could.  {My painted letters would of taken hours and ended up looking like a 2 year old did it!}

Oh, and do you see that “snow” on the garland.  That’s also a Wal-Mart touch…snow in a spray can!  Ummmm…super fun to use!

Yes, these are ornaments in old mattress springs.  I have yet to live down bringing these home…  And yet, this momma doesn’t care because quirky re-purposing is fun!

Vintage aqua Ball jars + “snow” + bottle brush trees = {sigh goes my pitter-pattering heart}

I picked up this flocked tree {and his twin brother} at Wal-Mart for $12 each!

We love to read Christmas picture books each December.  Our stack of books dwindled after we gave away the baby and toddler books; and now we are down to the ones that will stay with us…forever!  These are the books that hold memories for my family.  And this Frosty the Snowman Little Golden Book was mine growing up!

The old window frame on the wall looked a little empty, and this wreath that my daughter made with some Artemisia growing in our yard was the perfect solution!

The top of our piano holds the kids nativity scene and our Jesse tree.  You can read all about our Advent tradition for this year here.  We really enjoy watching the ornaments reach a little higher on the tree each day after we do our Advent reading.

I promise that Wal-Mart is not paying me to promote them!  But, yes, this tree is also from there…

And now on to the living room fireplace…

Thank you for stopping by!  I so appreciate you visiting our little corner of the world!  And I pray that in the final days before Christmas day, you are finding the peace and joy that is only found in Jesus.  “For Unto Us a Child is Born…”
