How to Create Pressed Leaf Decor for Your Home

Fall always seems to get me in a nostalgic mood, and this year I was reminiscing about pressing leaves in my childhood.  Did you ever do that?  I’m not sure what I did with the colorful pressed leaves, but every year, I would gather a stack of books and find the prettiest leaves.  Fast forward 30 years and I realized that I could create some simple fall decor by framing these pressed leaves.  And I thought that I would take you along for the ride with a quick little tutorial…in case you want to make some too!

Supplies Needed:

Fresh or semi-freshly fallen leaves

Wax paper

Heavy books

Picture frames {size and color are your choice: check local thrift shops and don’t be afraid to paint them!}

White cardstock

Mod Podge

Small paint brush

Follow these simple steps and you will have some unique fall decor for your home:

1. Gather some pretty leaves of your choosing and lay them between sheets of wax paper.

2. Place these on a hard surface and under a stack of books (or other heavy object).  My daughter says that they need at least one week to dry.  Well, I forgot about my leaves and left them for a few weeks.  So, let’s just say a minimum of one week…and a max of “don’t forget about it!”

3. Once the drying time is up, remove them from the wax paper and come up with your designs.

4. Before adhering the leaves to your card stock, lay the frame on top of your design to be sure that the leaves will all be inside the frame.

5. Use a small paint brush to apply the Mod Podge to the back of the leaf.  Place the leaf where you would like it on your card stock.  Once the leaves are stuck on the paper, apply a thin coat of Mod Podge to the front of each leaf as well.

6. Allow the Mod Podge to completely dry and then frame them!  {In the meantime, wash your paint brush out with warm soapy water to remove the glue.}
